Soulmates are rare and prized in the world of shinobi. The healing and implicit loyalty always makes for something powerful and prized -- and not something that's supposed to be found between two members of an enemy clan.

So, no. Tobirama wasn't expecting this.

Uchiha Hikaku, asked by his clan head to join his household as a dignified beta, does not think of saying anything other than yes, knowing he will have no opportunity to ever be closer to Madara than this. His duties will include caring for the household, including Madara's new mate. Which is perfectly fine, Hikaku can deal with that easily.

At least, he can until Tobirama turns out to be nothing like he expected, in ways that really shouldn't be a problem, but are.

It is a decision he may, or may not, come to regret.

It's an old, old tradition, back from before the clans were constantly at each other's throats. At age sixteen, main house children go out into the world, find their first missions, work with civilians, build some good will for their clan.

The fact that he's not alone in the experience really only makes it worse.

Tobirama has never before used the seal in real combat. He has made certain that no one knows about its existence but him. And yet when he moves to flash to the kunai he's thrown with the hirashin seal he'd so carefully painted on it…

Someone beats him to it.

The mission is as highly efficient as it is foolish. More's the fool to Madara for seeing it through to the end.

At least he won't be going home empty handed.

Imagine his surprise when Denki is the one to catch attention -- and is the one who has to leave.

Denki might be having the worst year of his life, but he's determined to find at least one bright spot in it.

See, Denki really, really loves his summer job. He's a tour-guide of sorts, taking people out on a glass-bottomed boat to get a look at the merfolk colony off the coast of his little seaside town. It's fun, it pays decent, he gets to talk about merfolk all day and he's managed to kind-of sort-of befriend a few of them.

And then a new merfolk appears. A siren, actually. And for some reason it seems to be very interested in him.

Modern Fantasy + Mermaid AU

Aizawa Shota is not the most personable man. He is aware of this, and is at peace with it. It is frustrating, though, when he's trying to gain the trust of a kid and making very little progress.

He certainly doesn't mean to ask for help, especially not from Fukukado Emi, of all people, but he gets it.

And if they have anything to say about it, the kid will get help, too.
